With the holidays approaching it's a great time to crack down on your finances. But putting yourself on a tight budget doesn't mean eliminating fun from your life. In fact there's a whole holiday devoted to that concept. Frugal Fun Day is celebrated on the first Saturday in October, which falls on October 4 this year. Need some inspiration? Check out these ten ideas for celebrating Frugal Fun Day.

Go Apple Picking
Apples grow in many parts of the country and now is a great time to pick them. Head to an apple orchard for some outdoor fall fun. You'll pay much less for the fruit than you would at most grocery stores.

Take a Hike
October is a great time to go for a hike. The weather is cooler and as the leaves change the views can be spectacular.

Visit the Humane Society
Who doesn't like playing with puppies and kittens? Give needy pets some attention at your local humane society or animal shelter.

Get a Treat at Wendy's
From now until the end of October participating Wendy's will be selling coupon books filled with free Jr. Frosty coupons. The coupon books are just $1, but you and your family could redeem them as well for a tasty, cheap treat.

Play Games
When was the last time you played Monopoly, Sorry or Trivia Pursuit? Dust off your board game collection and have some old fashioned fun.

Explore the Library
Check out the calendar of events at your local library. There may be a free event going on that you could attend. Or just find a great book or movie to check out and enjoy.

Feed the Ducks
Have some old bread? The ducks won't mind if it's not fresh. Take it to a nearby pond and share a meal with your feathered friends.

Hit the Thrift Store
Head to your favorite thrift store and find your next Halloween costume. Take time to get creative pulling together the best outfit to wear later in the month.

Make DIY Play Dough
Get crafty and make some play dough using ingredients found in your pantry. Put a seasonal twist on it with the help of who makes fall spice play dough.

Carve Pumpkins
Why not celebrate one holiday by preparing for another? Halloween is just a few weeks away. Pick up some affordable pumpkins and get to work on your masterpiece.
