Museum Day Live! happens every year. For just one day hundreds of museums across the country open their doors for free. In the spirit of the Smithsonian Museums which are always free, Museum Day Live! is hosted by Smithsonian magazine. But make sure you get the most out of this cool event with these tips.

Search For Museums
More than 1,000 museums across the country are participating in Museum Day Live! Check out SmithsonianMag.com to find participating museums in your area. Just plug in your state and zip code to find some in your area that are offering free admission.

Choose Your Favorite
While it may be tough to decide between a free ticket to an art museum or a free ticket to a natural history museum you'll need to choose your favorite. That's because according to the event rules you can only download a ticket for you and a guest to one museum.

Register Now
Don't just show up at a participating museum and expect to get in. You actually have to register in advance at SmithsonianMagazine.com. Once you have a free account you can request a ticket to one participating venue. The ticket will be available to download immediately up to the date of the event.

Using a Mobile Device
After you register for your Museum Day Live! ticket you can either print it out or have it accessible on your mobile device. Just be careful because not all museums will accept the digital ticket so you may want to check with your venue ahead of time.

Perks and Loopholes
Since one person registering can receive two tickets you may be able to visit two venues if you pair up with a buddy. Your friend will register for a second location, but you can't have the same address. Also, as a gift for participating in Museum Day Live you'll also receive a free one-year digital edition of Smithsonian magazine beginning with the October issue.
