5 Cheaper Alternatives to Starbucks' $5 Pumpkin Spice Latte

Posted on 09/11/2014

Orange is the new black as the pumpkin craze hits new levels in America. U.S. pumpkin-flavored sales jumped 14 percent to about $308 million in 2013, according to Nielsen. If you don't want to spend a small fortune on Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Lattes, check out these five alternatives to that liquid gold.

McCafe Pumpkin Latte
If you head to McDonald's for your pumpkin coffee fix instead of Starbucks you'll save nearly $1.70. A small McCafe pumpkin latte will set you back $2.29 compared to about $3.95 for a similarly sized pumpkin latte at Starbucks.

DIY Pumpkin Spice Latte
Pick up some canned pumpkin and pull out some spices from your cupboard to whip up your own pumpkin spice latte. The recipe from TheKitchn.com requires whole milk, vanilla extract and-- yes-- freshly ground black pepper. It's considerably cheaper than Starbucks' PSL and if you ask the recipe's author, tastier too.

International Delight Pumpkin Pie Spice Creamer
An entire bottle of International Delight Pumpkin Pie Spice Creamer will cost you less than one Starbucks PSL. Or you could head to International Delight's Facebook page and enter to win an entire case of the stuff.

Dunkin Donuts Pumpkin Latte
Dunkin Donuts is getting in on the pumpkin party by offering pumpkin lattes, pumpkin mochas and even a pumpkin crème brulee drink. Expect to pay about a buck less for your Dunkin Donuts drink than you would at 'bux. Plus, unlike Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts is not afraid to let customers use coupons to save some extra cash.

7-Eleven Pumpkin Spice Coffee
Convenience store chain 7-Eleven may win the award for most affordable pumpkin spice coffee. From now until September 14 the chain is offering 50-cent brew to celebrate 50 years of on-the-go coffee. Plus they're kicking off a new rewards program through the 7-Eleven app. Every seventh cup of coffee you buy will be free and that includes the seasonal favorite, pumpkin spice.
