Stores Offering Post-Purchase Price Matching

Posted on 08/20/2014

Price matching is a great tool for ensuring you're getting the best deal possible on just about anything you buy. But did you know that some stores will price match even after you've made the purchase? So even if you've lugged your new stuff home, don't give up the hunt for scoring an even better deal when you shop at these retailers.

Sears offers a very competitive price matching policy. Once you make a purchase at Sears you still have 14 days to find it cheaper somewhere else. Keep in mind that Sears will not match the price of an internet-only retailer. But if you find the lower price online, it must include shipping and handling.

Wal-Mart recently released the Deal Catcher feature, which is taking the responsibility off of consumers to find the best price possible. Instead Wal-Mart does the work for you. Once you've made your purchase at Wal-Mart, enter your receipt number at If another retailer's advertised price was lower you'll get a Wal-Mart gift card for the difference.

According to Target's corporate policy they will match the price of a qualifying item if the identical product is advertised for less in the following week's Target ad. You can also get cash back within seven days if you notice a lower price at,,,,, or in a competitor's local printed add. You'll need to bring in proof of the current lower price as well as your original receipt.

Best Buy
The general rule for taking advantage of a post-purchase price match at Best Buy is that it must be done during the return/exchange period. This can vary depending on what the product is, but almost everything can be returned or exchanged within 15 days. If you're a member of the My Best Buy program you'll receive an extended returns and exchanges period of 30 or 45 days on most purchases, which is a smart move if you're hoping to take advantage of a price match.

Toys R Us and Babies R Us
You have until seven days after the purchase date to receive a price match at Toys R Us or Babies R Us. These big box retailers will match prices from select competitor websites including,,,, and more. They'll also match prices in competitors' local print advertisements and on their own websites as long as it's not an online-only price.

Office retailer Staples also gives customers 14 days to find the product for a lower price elsewhere. They will price match 14 competitors including Office Depot, Office Max and Best Buy.
