Stocking Your Freezer for Fall: An Easy Once-a-Month-Cooking Plan

Posted on 08/26/2014

Having a stockpile of meals in your freezer seems like a great way to save money and time. During those hectic week nights when you're tempted to take the family to a fast food joint you can simply open the freezer for a ready-to-go meal. If you've ever been hesitant to try once-a-month cooking consider these tips to help stock your freezer for fall.

Rally Friends
Consider rallying a few friends to join you in your once-a-month cooking project. Have everyone double or triple a couple of recipes. That way everyone can share their meals. Making more of one recipe is much easier than making multiple recipes. The ingredient list is shorter and when you share you'll end up with a better variety.

Use the Slow Cooker
To keep yourself from doing much cooking at all, find slow cooker recipes. That way all you'll have to do on your meal prep day is put ingredients into large freezer bags labeled with instructions. When you're ready thaw the bag in the fridge overnight and pop it in the slow cooker so dinner will be waiting when you get home.

Shop at One Store
Rather than running to several stores to do all of your shopping, stick with one. Erin at created a plan that makes 20 meals from Costco for $150. She's providing recipes and a printable shopping list all for free.

Choose a Seasonal Menu
There are lots of once-a-month cooking plans floating around the web. But before you choose one make sure you consider the time of year. This plan from is specifically designed for September, taking into account the fruits and vegetables that are in season this time of year.

Send Off the Kids
Prepping a dozen or more meals at one time will take multi-tasking, extreme organization and concentration. It's not the time when you want kids competing for your attention. Schedule a day when you can have the kitchen to yourself to enjoy distraction-free cooking.
