Live It Up: A Frugal Bucket List for the Final Weeks of Summer

Posted on 08/06/2014

The patio chairs and lawn equipment have been marked down and moved to the clearance aisle, replaced by displays full of shiny new folders and crisp notebooks. Yes, back-to-school shopping season has arrived. Whether you only have a few more days or a few weeks until the unofficial end of summer, here are some frugal items to put on your bucket list.

Visit a Drive-In Movie Theater
End summer with a nostalgic visit to one of the 5,000 remaining drive-in movie theaters. Check out the database at Choose a flick and enjoy it al fresco under the summer night sky.

Eat Ice Cream
Ice cream is a summer must. And surely you have not consumed nearly enough this summer. Consider this your last ditch effort to pack in as much frozen goodness as possible during the final weeks of summer. Hit up Steak & Shake for half price shakes weekdays from 2-4pm and 2-4am. Drinks are also half off from 2-4pm at Sonic and shakes are half off after 8pm during the summer.

Play Messy Twister
Remember the classic game Twister that puts you and your friends into some pretty awkward positions? Take it outside and make it messy by piling colored foam onto each circle. And when you've called your last right hand red pull out the hose and clean off.

Go Camping
Have you spent time roughing it this summer? Make some memories in the great outdoors with an end-of-summer camping trip. And if you time it for August 25 you won't pay an entrance fee at any of the country's 401 national parks.

Stage a Neighborhood Water Balloon Fight
Finish summer with a bang. And a splat. And a whole lot of screaming. Hold a neighborhood water balloon fight. Pick up a Tie-Not for $9.99 at and fill up your ammunition in seconds by screwing the device on to your garden hose.
