In addition to eating hot dogs and lighting things on fire, shopping seems to be a very patriotic pastime for 4th of July weekend. Retailers are competing for your attention during the long holiday weekend by lowering prices on key items. In between cookouts and fireworks displays you may want to shop for these items on 4th of July weekend.

Summer Apparel
It's still hot out there, but shorts, tank tops and flip flops will be marked down across the board. Retailers already have their eye on the back-to-school season so they'll need to make room for new merchandise by clearing out summer apparel. If you waited to update your summer wardrobe now is definitely the time to do it. At Old Navy women's tanks start at just $2 and shorts for the entire family start at only $8.

Swimwear
You wouldn't know we have more than two whole months of summer left by looking at the swimsuit racks. Prices have already been slashed significantly even though there is still plenty of time to put them to use. At VictoriasSecret.com more than 700 styles have been reduced by up to 60%. Kohl's reduced the price of Croft & Barrow swim separates to just $17.99, regularly $40.

Appliances
The mid-summer holiday also seems to be a good time to purchase appliances like washing machines, refrigerators and stoves. Most major retailers are offering discounts including Home Depot where you can save up to 30% on all major appliances during their Red, White and Blue Savings sale. At Sears shoppers can save 40% or more on appliance Super Buys during the holiday weekend.

Outdoor Furniture
Stores need to move out their patio furniture so they're reducing the prices to sell. Outdoor dining tables, chairs, sofas and more are marked down by up to 30% at Crateandbarrel.com. Macy's is offering lots of great deals on outdoor furniture. The Oasis Outdoor 7 Piece Set, once $1,999, is now 75% off.

Mattresses
If you missed the influx of Memorial Day mattress sales you're in luck. July 4th seems to be another big mattress holiday. At JCPenney mattresses are up to half off, plus you can use coupon code HOTDOG to save an additional 10% through July 6. Mattress Firm is offering close out deals for the holiday so shoppers can save up to $300 on top of already reduced prices. So why not spend the rest of your summer getting some good sleep on a new mattress?
