As soon as you drive a new car off the lot you'll likely lose thousands of dollars in value almost instantly. But Consumer Reports say two and three-year-old vehicles often give you the best bang for your buck because taxes and insurance are lower and they've already taken the biggest depreciation hit. But how do you know if a used car is reliable, safe and a good deal? These six sites can help you find exactly what you're looking for in a used car.

AutoTrader
AutoTrader provides the largest selection of used vehicles on the web, attracting more than 14 million qualified buyers each month, according to the company's website. The site has a friendly search function that helps buyers find cars by the qualities they care most about, whether that's body type, mileage or price. And the selection really can't be matched with more than 3 million vehicle listings.

eBay Motors
Want to make sure you're not overpaying for a used car? Head to eBay Motors and search the year, make and model of the one you have your eye on. You'll get instant data on the industry pricing range and even recent eBay sales for this type of car. The site also offers the Vehicle Purchase Protection Program for buyers so you don't have to worry about odometer discrepancies, missing titles, vehicles not as described, items not received and more. If something isn't right, submit a Reimbursement Request within 45 days.

Cars.com
Cars.com lets you do side-by-side comparisons of various vehicles so you can see what specifications and features your favorites have. Dealer reviews will also help you feel better about the fact that you're buying from a reputable source.

Hemmings
If you're looking for more than a set of wheels to get you from point A to point B, then you may want to check out Hemmings. The marketplace features classic and unusual cars, geared towards people who have a passion for that sort of thing.

Ad Hunt'r
Craigslist is also a great source for finding used cars in your area. But sometimes the search functions are tedious. Instead, try adhuntr.com, which allows you to search for cars posted on Craigslist throughout the entire US, or by region. It will help your hunt for a used car on Craigslist go much faster and by covering more area hopefully you'll be able to find exactly what you want.

Carfax
When you think of Carfax you may simply think of vehicle history reports. Now Carfax offers a way to search for used cars based on whether the vehicle has been in any accidents, if service records were kept or how many owners the car has had. It's a unique way to search so that you know up front that you're not considering a car with any red flags.
