Ten Cool Ways to Use Pallets (And Where to Find Them For Free)

Posted on 07/15/2014

Entire industries rely on pallets for shipping goods. In fact, there are more than 1.8 billion wood pallets in circulation each day in the US. There's no shortage of these cheap, wooden workhorses. Find them for free at furniture stores, hardware stores or even on Craigslist. Turns out they can be used for way more than holding heavy loads. Check out these ten cool ways to use wooden pallets.

Bike Rack
Turn two pallets into a parking place for a few bicycles like makezine.com suggests. Just be sure to remove any nails that could damage rubber tires or scratch paint.

Garden Table
Junky pallets and four discarded table legs became a gorgeous outdoor table created by faroutflora.com. By leaving a cut out in the center they created a space for planting succulents.

Compost Bin
Why spend money on a compost bin when you can simply use free pallet wood to build one in your backyard? Dig a trench to secure a few pallets into the ground. Find instructions at younghouselove.com.

Garden Tool Storage
Pallets have empty space in the middle for a fork lift, but if you get creative that space can be used for so much more. Try propping the pallet upright, storing brooms, shovels and other long-handled garden tools in the opening.

To add some rustic flare to your bedroom try building a headboard out of pallet wood. Check out wearethefamily.com for some tips on completing this project and even adding a light fixture into the furniture piece.

Outdoor Seating
Pallets are made to withstand the elements. That's why they can be good for creating outdoor furniture. HGTV.com has easy-to-follow instructions to help you outfit your entire deck using two pallets, screws and a few other odds and ends.

Pallet Art
Find inspiration from Etsy artists and create your own pallet art. Artist Pixelsandwood applied stain and hand painted the quote "the dream is free but the hustle is sold separately." If you'd rather just buy the art readymade hers is $40.

Wooden Letters
A disassembled pallet, wood glue, nails and a jigsaw can be used to create beautiful large letters. Spell out anything you want with the help of thistlewoodfarms.com.

Wine Rack
Need a place to store your wine? This is yet another thing pallet wood can do. In fact handyman Shane Conlan created an eight minute long YouTube video to explain just how to do it.

American Flag
Pallets may be used to ship goods globally, but they all can be transformed into the perfect canvas for a hand painted American flag. Ashley from Lilblueboo.com says it took her less than 45 minutes to turn her pallet into a beautiful Old Glory for her outdoor living space, proving once again that pallets have some amazing potential.
