Safer (And Cheaper!) Alternatives to Shooting Off Fireworks for the 4th

Posted on 06/27/2014

Fourth of July spending is exploding according to experts. In Visa's annual Independence Day spending survey Americans spent close to $300 on the holiday last year, setting aside part of that for fireworks. Those little sticks of colorful explosives may be fun, but they're expensive and potentially dangerous. Here are five safer (and cheaper!) alternatives to shooting off fireworks for the 4th.

LED Foam Stick Batons
These are like sparklers that never burn out. The LED Foam Stick Batons feature three different lighting speeds: fast, slow or constant. A pair of blue batons is just $1.99 at

Red, White and Blue Glow Sticks
Glow sticks are a fun way to light up the night-- especially when they're red, white and blue. Just crack the stick and you'll get hours of glow time. Each pack includes 25 glow sticks for less than $17.

Confetti Poppers
Fill the sky with color when you pop open a confetti popper. They're fun for weddings, birthdays and, of course, patriotic parties. Pick up a dozen for only $2.99 at

Glow in the Dark Bubbles
Bubbles have never been so cool as they are with this Glowing Bubble Recipe from You'll need dish soap, water and glow in the dark paint to pull it off. You can even use the mixture to make fun firework-inspired 4th of July art.

Fiber Optic Wand
Just like fireworks vary in color and style, so does the pulsating fiber optic wand, just $3 at Choose between six different light modes. And since it's battery operated, you can use it for July 4th fun year after year, unlike fireworks which are gone in an instant.
