Believe it or not scrapbooking is more popular than golf. According to the Craft and Hobby Association more than one-third of US households honor their memories through scrapbooking, rubber stamping or creating paper crafts. It's a multi-billion dollar industry and anyone who has participated knows it can get expensive. Since National Scrapbooking Day falls on May 3rd we're offering up some ideas for how to save money on scrapbooking supplies.

Organize What You Have
If your scrapbooking supplies are scattered you may end up buying supplies you don't need. Organize what you have first. Pick up a five-pack of specially-sized storage boxes for $17.99 from Overstock.com and organize your paper by color. Wrangle all of that ribbon with something unexpected-- an old oatmeal box. Get the simple instructions at curbly.com. And finally, Better Homes and Garden explains how to build a paint can pyramid for stashing pens, stickers and scissors.

Switch to Cardstock
Colored cardstock is way cheaper than patterned paper. Use it when you can. For instance a pack of 250 sheets of brightly colored cardstock is just $9.99 at Staples.com. That's about four cents a sheet. When was the last time you saw sheets of paper selling for four cents a sheet at your favorite craft store?

Check the Clearance Aisles
Every craft store and big box retailer has them. Clearance aisles can be gems for finding deals on scrapbooking supplies. These days even retailers like Target and Walmart have a significant selection of scrapbooking supplies and it's often marked down to make room for new merchandise.

Find Free Printables
For the price of some printer ink and plain white paper you can find some pretty cool free scrapbooking supplies online. Check out uprintables.blogspot.com for fun free embellishments like colorful chevron arrows, sheets of tickets, or even cool word art.

Don't Shop Without a Coupon
Whether you're going to Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Joann's, AC Moore or any other craft store, don't go without a coupon in hand. Michael's and Hobby Lobby offer free apps where you can find all available coupons. You can also find printable coupons on the stores' websites like this one at Joann.com. This is an easy way to save up to 50% on your scrapbooking supplies.
