If you typically pay a pro to help you with your W-2s and 1099s you may have to pay more this year. According to NY1.com tax prep fees are up about six percent compared to last year. A simple return can cost as much as $152 which is a good reason to take advantage of these 2014 tax prep freebies.

Free File
Take the hard work out of tax preparation with Free File, available at irs.gov. You can use brand-name software or Free File Fillable Forms. Different software and forms are available depending on your income level.


H&R Block
There's a long list of freebies at hrblock.com including free tax prep, free printing, free e-file, free in-person audit support and free advice from a tax expert. Filing your federal return won't cost you a dime, but you'll have to pay for your state preparation.


Turbo Tax
Turbo Tax is promising their best federal free edition ever this year. Those filing simple federal returns can do it for free at Turbotax.intuit.com. You can even claim Earned Income Tax Credit at no additional charge.


Tax Act Online
Federal tax returns are free for everyone at Taxactonline.com. It's free to prepare, free to print and free to e-file.


Free Volunteer Tax Prep
There are several programs available that offer free expert tax assistance to taxpayers. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program you can talk to a real person who has expertise in this area.


MyFreeTaxes.com
For individuals or families with a combined income of $58,000 or less in 2013 there is myfreetaxes.com. Supported by the Walmart Foundation, the website has helped millions of families claim nearly $8 billion in tax refunds and credits since its start in 2009. Through free online software and free local tax help centers you can get help filing your tax returns.
