Sleep Week: Low Cost Fixes to Make Your Bedroom More Relaxing

Posted on 03/03/2014

Need an excuse to pull the covers back up and get more quality time with your pillow? The first week in March is National Sleep Awareness Week. We all know that ideally we should be getting seven to nine hours of shut eye a night. Not happening? Maybe these low cost fixes will help make your bedroom more conducive to rest.

Remove the TV
Let's start with a freebie. Experts agree that the first step in aiding in restful sleep is eliminating electronics. It's important to create a relaxing atmosphere and as much as you want to watch the latest episode of Scandal from the comfort of your bed, it's not a great idea.

Spray Your Sheets
You may not have time to wash your sheets every day, but 71 percent of people polled by the National Sleep Foundation say they get a more comfortable night's sleep on sheets with a fresh scent. The Laundress Linen Spray can help you do that quickly and affordably. The 16 ounce bottle is $14.95 at Crate and Barrel. The eco-friendly linen spray is subtly infused with lavender, maintaining that just-washed scent in between laundry days.

Install Black Out Shades
Nearly three in four Americans say a dark bedroom is key for getting good sleep. And while blackout blinds or curtains can be pricey, there are good deals available. Prime Vinyl Blackout Shades from start at just $11.

Paint the Walls
If your bedroom walls are red you may want to pull out your paint brush. Research shows red is a stimulating color and not good for relaxation. Color can be a very personal choice though, so instead of relying on research choose one that invokes a restful mood in you.

Grab a trash bag and a storage bin. Fill both with unnecessary items that are making your room more chaotic than cathartic. Decluttering your room doesn't have to cost anything at all, but it can be an important step towards investing in quality sleep.
