Snow days are great until they start to invade spring break. In Philadelphia the school district shortened spring break, announcing students would have to attend class April 15, 16 and 17 to make up for snow days. School officials in Charlotte, North Carolina are considering a similar move. And in New Jersey spring break became a casualty of winter storms. For families having to shift their spring break plans here are some ideas for having fun at home.

Push Back Bedtime
Staying up late can make an ordinary evening feel like something special for kids. Let them stay up late during their spring break staycation, even if it's just so they can watch Frozen for the 14th time.

Explore Your Community
There are probably lots of fun things going on in your own town. Visit a local amusement park, try a new restaurant or tour a nearby factory. Find a list of companies that welcome visitors at factorytoursusa.com.

Redecorate Their Rooms
Vacations are a great way to recharge and refresh, but since you're stuck at home this year why not find a new way to reinvigorate your life? Help the kids to redecorate their bedrooms. The changes don't have to be drastic or expensive. Paint an accent wall, rearrange the furniture or make a DIY headboard using Christmas lights or twine.

Take a Reading Challenge
Hit the library and let the kids pick out fun books to read during their abbreviated spring break. Download the Reading Challenge Sheet at teacherspayteachers.com. It's only $1 and it will get your kids out of their reading rut by challenging them to read in the bathtub, while sitting in the grass or as they swing.

Create a Keepsake
You may not have awesome spring break family photos from your time at the beach, but you can certainly create a priceless keepsake. Purchase this PDF digital file for $15 from Etsy, grab some paint and add each child's handprint to the tree. The text is customizable so you may even want to create it to say "spring break 2014" so you can always remember your fun times together.
