5 Affordable Ways to Make Mardi Gras Fun For Kids

Posted on 02/28/2014

Mardi Gras in New Orleans can be very adult-oriented. After all, we know what ladies have to do to get a string of beads. But that doesn't mean kids should be excluded from this traditional celebration. Here are five affordable ways to make Mardi Gras fun for kids.

Decorate a Mask
Masks are a Mardi Gras tradition kids can really get behind. What child doesn't love playing dress up? Find a free printable Mardi Gras mask at skiptomylou.org. Help them embellish it with glitter, feathers and markers.

String Some Beads
Instead of buying cheap plastic necklaces have your kids make their own Mardi Gras beads. You'll just need some old magazines, a glue stick and string to pull this project together. Alphamom.com suggests using acrylic paint in festive Mardi Gras colors like green, purple and gold to give your DIY bead necklace an authentic look.

Build a Float

Building a float seems like a daunting task, but not when it's a miniature version of the real thing. Start with a shoebox and use household supplies like tissue paper, aluminum foil and beads to create a festive fun-sized float. Get other kids involved and pretty soon you'll have your own mini Mardi Gras parade rolling through the living room.

Bake a King Cake
Kids will love helping to create an authentic Mardi Gras King Cake. This recipe from Allrecipes.com makes it very easy by using three cans of refrigerated sweet roll dough and ready-to-spread frosting.

Make a Shaker
Mardi Gras has its own style of music. Introduce kids to Zydeco and Cajun beats through a free Mardi Gras station at live365.com. Help them design their own shakers using an empty water bottle filled with dried rice, lentils, beans or pasta so they can dance along to the music's rhythm.
