Quick Cash: How to Prepare Items for a Consignment Sale Event

Posted on 09/06/2013

Consignment sale events are a great way to unload unwanted clothing, toys and baby gear while making quick cash. Setting aside a little time to properly prepare for these consignment events can help boost your sales and put more money in your pocket.

Wash Everything
Start with laundering all of your secondhand clothing. If it's clean, smells fresh and is wrinkle-free you'll impress more potential buyers. For items that can't be thrown in the washing machine, wipe them down, dust them off and put them back in the original box if you stashed that away. This is the quickest and easiest way to freshen your items for consignment.

Stick With the Season
While it can be tempting to unload everything your kids just outgrew, consign with the season. That means for the upcoming fall consignment sale try selling winter clothing and gear. You'll appeal to more shoppers who are looking for items they can use now, not six months from now.

Hang Clothing
Hanging clothes neatly will make them look their best. If you're not a hanger hoarder check for free listings on Craigslist, ask for freebies at your favorite clothing retailer or check with the dry cleaner. They may all be willing to add to your supply.

Price Reasonably
Typically a good rule for pricing items at a consignment sale is to list items at 30 to 50 percent of retail. Need some more specific guidelines? Check out his chart from coastal-kids.com. It categorizes clothing items into levels starting with discount department stores up to boutiques to help you not over or under price your items.

Combine Small Items
Rather than sell a bunch of small items try packaging them together. Bulk products mean you'll only need one buyer instead of several.

Write Powerful Descriptions
Most consignment sales have specific listing requirements. If your sale allows you to write short product descriptions on the price tag take advantage of this marketing opportunity. Use descriptive keywords including "never worn," "like new" or "barely used." Include the name brand if that could be important to a potential buyer. Hopefully in the end you'll be able to score lots of sales, trading your clutter in for cash.
