Budget Family Photos: How to Hire a Low-Cost Photographer

Posted on 09/23/2013

Cell phone cameras have come a long way. Add in some fancy filters and your novice shots look pretty darn good. But capturing weddings, babies and important life milestones with the help of a professional photographer is the way to go. Having someone else worry about getting the best shots can take the pressure off family members who don't have the photography skills and quality equipment to do your special moments justice. A great photographer can cost big bucks, but here are some tips for hiring a low-cost pro.

Consider Newbies or Part-Timers
One of the main reasons a photographer would charge less for their services is because they are new to the business. But just because someone doesn't have a lot of experience doesn't mean they won't take great photos of you and your family. Some photographers book sessions on evenings and weekends as a way to supplement their income. Part-timers may also offer better prices than those who are full-time photographers.

Check Group Discount Sites
Quite often photographers will use sites like Living Social or Groupon to help them get their name out in the community. They'll offer incredible deals for maternity, family or newborn sessions. Even though you'll be using a photographer you probably aren't familiar with you'll likely end up with images you love.

Search Craigslist
Under the "Services" heading on Craigslist you'll see a category called "creative." Here local photographers will list information about their availability, expertise and prices. Most photographers using Craigslist to drum up business are willing to give you a bargain.

Ask for Recommendations
The best place to find a photographer is in your circle of contacts. See a friend's cute baby pics on Facebook? Ask them who took them. And don't be shy about finding out how much they paid. You may uncover a great budget photographer this way.

Do Online Research
If you find a potential budget-friendly photographer check out their Facebook page. Some photographers will offer special deals, discounts and even giveaways as a marketing tool and increase the number of likes they have on Facebook. Consider yourself lucky to book this pro before prices increase.
