How to Save Money on Immunizations

Posted on 08/06/2013

Many children are required to get vaccines before they enter childcare or school. According to reports, for every $1 spent on immunization, $16.50 is saved in medical costs. August is National Immunization Awareness Month and since some vaccines can cost $50 or even $100 per shot check out these ways to save money on immunizations.

Vaccines for Children Program
Many doctors' offices participate in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Vaccines for Children Program. It's a federally funded program that provides vaccines at no cost to children who might otherwise not be vaccinated because of the fee. If you don't have insurance or if your insurance doesn't cover vaccines than you may be eligible.

Public Health Department
Check with your local Public Health Department. Many have monthly immunization clinics where they offer the standard shots that children and adults typically need for a deeply discounted price. For instance in Franklin County, Ohio, immunizations are just $15 each during scheduled clinics, but no child is turned away if the cost is not affordable.

Try Combination Vaccines
It's possible to get multiple vaccines in a single shot. Combination vaccines have been used in the US for more than 70 years, according to the CDC. One example is DTaP which includes diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis. Giving your child several vaccines at once means fewer office visits which could save you money and save your child the trauma of multiple needles.

Compare Prices
Your child's pediatrician should be able to tell you what they charge for vaccines. Find out what your insurance covers. You may uncover better deals at places like the CVS Minute Clinic where all prices for vaccines are clearly listed on their website.

Talk to Your Insurance Company
Your insurance company may be able to offer additional tips to help you reduce the cost of getting you or your child vaccinated. Since 2011 the government has required insurers to cover the complete cost of ten vaccines recommended by the CDC so even if vaccines weren't covered in the past they may be now.
