Parents won't be pulling quite as much out of their pocketbooks to pay for back-to-school essentials this year, according to the National Retail Federation. The NRF says the average family with school-aged children will spend $634.78 on apparel, shoes, supplies and electronics. That's about $50 less than last year. Total back-to-school spending for 2013 is expected to reach $26.7 billion. But for those parents who don't want to be average, consider buying some of your back-to-school must-haves from secondhand sources.

School Uniforms
For students who wear school uniforms, parents may want to consider buying some of the required clothing from other parents. Sites like SchoolUniformResale.com offer free classified ads from students looking to offload their school uniforms. Also check with your child's school. Some schools like Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart sell gently used uniforms for $5 or less.

Textbooks
Save big bucks by purchasing used textbooks for your college co-ed. Shoppers enjoy discounts of up to 90-percent when they buy used at amazon.com. Or use a textbook search engine like bookfinder.com which helps you compare prices on over 150 million books.

Electronics
More than half of families with children in grades kindergarten through 12 will purchase electronics, according to the NRF. If you're worried about handing over a brand new tablet to your child check out Glyde.com. Save up to 90-percent on gently used products, but enjoy the same service and protection that you would find at a retail store. If for some reason you're not satisfied with your purchase Glyde will give you a pre-addressed, pre-stamped shipping kit and you'll have your money back within a few days.

Sporting Goods
If your student plans to play a sport this school year shop around for used gear. Check out local Craigslist ads or PlayItAgainSports.com. Used sporting equipment will cost significantly less and if your child decides to throw in the towel after the first week of practice you probably won't be quite as upset.
