According to CBS News, advertising mail accounts for 59 percent of all mail showing up in Americans' mailboxes. Only half is ever read, says the US Postal Service. The rest is trashed or recycled. Stop wasting your time dealing with this clutter by using these five free ways to eliminate junk mail.

Credit and Insurance Offers
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act you have the ability to opt-out from receiving credit and insurance offers for five years or permanently. Go to OptOutPrescreen.com to start the process. If you choose to stop receiving these offers for five years your request can be processed electronically through this website. If you choose permanent action you'll have to print a form, fill it out and mail it in. This means you'll no longer receive offers from the four consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian, Innovis and TransUnion.

Catalog Choice
Create a free account at catalogchoice.org and they'll help you eliminate unwanted junk mail like catalogs, coupons and donation requests. When you get mail you don't want search for the company at catalogchoice.org. Click to opt out and they'll take it from there. They've already processed more than 25 million opt-outs for more than 1.7 million account holders. You can even stop receiving phone books with the help of CatalogChoice.org.

PaperKarma App
Download the free PaperKarma app and you'll notice the flow of junk mail slow to a trickle. Snap a photo of your unwanted mail and tap "unsubscribe." PaperKarma will identify it and eliminate it.

CatalogSpree
For those who do like catalogs (and there are plenty out there) try the more earth-friendly method with CatalogSpree. It's a free app that lets you flip through hundreds of catalogs on your iPhone or iPad. It's a great way to eliminate junk mail while still shopping your favorite stores from the comfort of home.

Call Customer Service
To handle the junk mail yourself find the customer service number listed on your pesky piece of junk mail. Call them up and demand to be removed from their mailing list. This may seem a little more tedious, but just think of all the trees-- and time-- you're saving for the future.
