How to Make Money on YouTube

Posted on 06/17/2013

You may think of YouTube as a great way to share your family videos with the world or to laugh away an hour looking at funny cat videos. But have you ever thought of YouTube as an opportunity to earn extra spending money? YouTube recently launched a new revenue sharing program, making it possible for your viral video to equal quick cash. According to reports last year video advertising generated $3.4 billion and is on tap to reach over $5 billion in 2013. Check out these ways to get a piece of the action with YouTube.

Submit a Video
When you submit a video on YouTube you can make money by enabling ads to appear. Click on the "monetization" tab and make sure the box marked "monetize my video" is checked. Be sure that your video is listed as "public". You'll be able to customize the ad formats you want. The video will go through a review process before it's approved.

Become a YouTube Partner
When at least one of the videos you upload to YouTube is approved for monetization that qualifies you to be called a YouTube partner. It gives you free access to resources that will help you improve your YouTube channel and reach more people.

Make Sure Your Videos are Eligible
If you want a video to have a shot at making money stick to YouTube's guidelines. Do not include any music, images or other content that you do not have the rights or permission to use. A video showing your cat dancing to a Black Eyed Peas hit may be hilarious, but if you don't have the rights to the song you can't make money off the video.

Review Affiliate Products
Besides selling ads on your videos you can also work with companies and post video reviews of products. Include the affiliate link to the product in your video description field. That way if a person makes a purchase through your link you'll get a cut of the sale.

Get More Subscribers and Viewers
The key to making more money with YouTube is by getting more people to watch your videos. There are lots of ways to do this but an important one is by listing your video properly to begin with. Optimize your video's title with keywords or a catchy phrase. Include tags and a well-written description. It's difficult to stand out in a sea stuffed with millions of other videos, but if you do you'll increase your YouTube earnings.
