Hundreds of events across the country are planned for May 8, the second annual National Bike to School Day. Biking to school reduces traffic congestion, increases physical activity and eliminates air-polluting emissions. Need some other reasons to bike to school? Maybe these deals on bicycles and cycling gear will help.

Toys R Us Bike & Trike Trade-In
Now through May 11 you can save up to $50 on any bike or trike at Toys R Us when you trade in any used bike or trike. The old bike or trike can be in any condition and the amount of the discount depends on how much you spend on a new bike or trike. Keep in mind that clearance bikes are excluded, but you can also save 30 percent on bike helmets and pad sets.

Local Bicycle Trader
If a used bike will do, but you don't feel like scouting out yard sales try LocalBikeTrader.com. They've got an entire section devoted to kids bikes of all kinds, and prices start at about $10.

Dick's Sporting Goods Trade In Trade Up Bike Event
Head to your local Dick's Sporting Goods location between now and May 11 to take part in the Trade In Trade Up Bike Event. Earn up to $75 off the purchase of a new bike when you bring in a used bike. All used bikes will be donated to Bikes for the World. If you prefer to shop online you'll score free shipping on all bikes, plus lots of discounts including 20 percent off all bike helmets.

BikesDirect.com
Get free shipping and no sales tax on any order at BikesDirect.com. Plus, most items are well below list price. For instance, a 2013 Windsor Wellington 1.0 Road Bike is $299.95, while other retailers sell it for more than double that.

Prorider.com
Bike helmets don't get much more affordable than they are at prorider.com. ProRider economy bicycle helmets sell for $3.65 each, plus shipping. Three sizes and three colors are available, all meeting CPSC Bicycle Helmet Standards. With that price there's no reason why every child biking to school isn't wearing protective gear.
