Healthy Weight Week: Expensive Fad Diets to Avoid

Posted on 01/21/2013

The 20th annual Healthy Weight Week runs from January 20-26. An easy way to find your ideal weight is by calculating your Body Mass Index, which can be done for free through the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Whether you need to lose a few pounds or not, Healthy Weight Week is a time to celebrate healthy living, which means avoiding expensive fad diets like these.

The K-E Diet
The K-E Diet sounds pretty crazy, but it's real. Doctors insert a feeding tube into a healthy person. Consuming just 800 calories a day for ten days participants lose up to 20 pounds. According to reports the K-E Diet costs about $1,500.

hCG Diet
According to US News, hCG is a hormone found in the urine of pregnant women and can work as an appetite suppressant. People on the hCG Diet have the hormone injected into their thigh. While consuming just 500-800 calories a day, pounds are shed, but health experts wonder at what cost? Financially it will cost you about $450 for a 21-day cycle, but your body could pay a bigger price.

Lemon and Maple Detox Diet
The Master Cleanse Diet made its debut more than 70 years ago, but it's still sticking around. It's been called one of the "worst fad diets", but it can also be expensive. It's key ingredient-- real organic maple syrup-- is pricey.

The Hollywood Diet
The Hollywood Diet claims you can lose up to 10 pounds in two days by just drinking their special formula of natural juices and botanical extracts. A two-day supply is $181.30, but many nutritional experts say sudden weight loss is difficult to maintain.

Clean Cleanse
Gwyneth Paltrow swears by it, but the Clean Cleanse is an expensive way to lose weight. It's $425 for a 21-day supply which includes two daily shake packets and supplements. You'll still have to buy your own healthy lunch every day.
