Cutting College Debt: Freebies Offered by Many Universities

Posted on 08/27/2012

College students starting school will pay about $8,240 in tuition and fees at public schools this year. At private schools the price tag is more than three times that amount. Over the last decade, in-state tuition and fees at public, four-year colleges increased at an average rate of 5.6% each year, according to the College Board's 2011 report on higher education pricing. That’s why it’s more important than ever to get the most out of your money. So why not take advantage of these freebies offered by most universities?

Free Gym Membership - Avoid packing on the dreaded freshman 15 by utilizing this valuable freebie—a gym membership. Most colleges throw in free access to their workout facilities with the price of tuition. This can also include free workout classes and locker room use. It’s a great way to stay fit and reduce stress after those tough classes.

Free Health Services - Health care can be a major budget buster, but thankfully for college students, medical services are often free at university medical clinics. Minor health issues can be easily resolved with a visit to this on-campus facility.

Free Entertainment - Few places offer as much culture free of charge than a college campus. Take advantage of free lectures, concerts, speakers, seminars and more through your university. Almost every day you’ll find free activities to keep you entertained and enlightened.

Free Food - While you’ll have to pay for your meal plan you can supplement dorm food with free meals. Check the student newspaper for meetings and events that are using free food to lure in students. They know this is a powerful draw for cash-strapped students and guess what? They’re right!

Free Career Advice - Just because you’ve declared a major doesn’t necessarily mean you know what you want to do for the rest of your life. Colleges employ experts to help students with exactly that. Utilize this free career advice so once you are done with higher education, you’ll have a way to pay off those student loans.
