Grabbing a seat at the Olympic games in London can cost as little as $35. But tickets to the most popular events cost hundreds—even thousands—of dollars. Here’s a look at the priciest seats at the 2012 Olympic games.
The Opening Ceremony
The Olympics haven’t even started yet and records are already being broken. The most expensive ticket to the Olympic games ever sold is a seat to the 2012 Opening Ceremony. They sold for around $3,200, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. (http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/records-9000/most-expensive-olympic-ticket-/) The opening show includes 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens and even a pair of goats as the Olympic stadium is transformed into the British countryside.
Men’s Basketball Final
If you want to save money on tickets to the Olympics, pick an early match. Once teams make it to the finals, ticket prices skyrocket. A prime example? The men’s basketball final. Even though no one knows who will be playing, seats are already selling for $1,500 according to Bloomberg.com.
Diving, Swimming and Gymnastics
Other incredibly popular Olympic events include diving, swimming and gymnastics. Tickets to finals in these events are either sold out or can be yours for about $700.
Track and Field’s Last Session
Tickets to the last track and field session scheduled for August 11 are also bringing in bank. The most expensive seats are now going for between $1,500 to $2,300 a pop. That’s significantly higher than the original face value which was about $75-$1,100.
Hospitality tickets are for the true VIP Olympic experience. They include five star cuisine, an open bar and a seat to a sporting event, but cost just under $7,000 for A-rated events like opening and closing ceremonies, track cycling, certain diving events and every swimming medal competition. But there is a catch—they can only be purchased in blocks of ten.
