Wildfires are ravaging the state of Colorado, destroying hundreds of homes and killing several people. Officials estimate the cost of battling just one of the fires to be closing in on $9 million with more than 1,500 firefighters working to contain the 28-square-mile Waldo Canyon fire. But there are many other fires burning in Colorado and New Mexico. Want to do more than simply watch the devastation on the news? Here are six ways to help wildfire victims and responders.
Donate to The Salvation Army Make a cash donation to The Salvation Army and feel good knowing 100% of your gift will help disaster responders meet specific needs of victims. Your donation will help cover costs associated with sorting, packing, transporting and distributing donated goods.
Volunteer in Colorado or New Mexico
If you’d rather give your time instead of your money, Samaritan’s Purse is looking for volunteers. Teams of up to 15 people will assist homeowners with removing debris and sifting through ash. Sign up at spvolunteernetwork.org.
Text a $10 Donation to the Red Cross
Simply text the word REDCROSS to 90999 and a $10 donation will be added to your Verizon Wireless bill. The gift will go into the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund for wildfire evacuees and victims.
Help Serve Breakfast to Evacuees
Catholic Charities is providing daily breakfast for Waldo Canyon Fire evacuees and they need help covering the costs associated with preparing hundreds of meals every day. You can make a monetary donation or provide much-needed items like oatmeal, aluminum foil and cereal. Learn more at ccharitiescc.org.
Help the Smallest Wildfire Victims
Since the beginning of the High Park Fire, the Larimer Humane Society has cared for more than 625 animals. While many have been returned to their homes the non-profit is still caring for animals displaced by the fire. Make a financial contribution to these four-legged evacuees by visiting larimerhumane.org.
Support the Colorado Fire Relief Fund
The Colorado chapter of The Jewish Federations of North America set up the Colorado Fire Relief Fund to help victims and support first responders. Every penny of your donation will go directly toward relief efforts.
