There’s nothing better than a smooth, creamy helping of ice cream on a hot summer day. While some argue that ice cream is kind of like pizza—even the cheap stuff is pretty good—homemade ice cream can be heaven. These recipes and tips prove it doesn’t have to be costly to make either.
Basic Ice Cream Base Recipe
Ice cream is comprised of mostly reasonably priced staples, many of which you probably already have in your fridge. Start with a basic recipe like this one from AllRecipes.com that includes heavy cream, half-and-half, egg yolks, sugar and salt. What you do with the base is where you can decide whether to invest more money or time.
Ice Cream Machines Under $50
Like most kitchen gadgets, ice cream makers come in a wide range of price points. But if you’re trying to keep your ice cream making hobby within your budget, check out the Cuisinart Classic Frozen Yogurt, Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker, just $49.93 on Amazon. There’s a slightly newer model available at Sur La Table for $10 more.
Use Plastic Storage Bags Instead
Don’t want to invest in an ice cream maker? There are other proven ways to make ice cream that don’t require special gadgets. For instance, TheKitchn.com explains how to make ice cream using only a few ingredients and supplies like Zip-Loc storage bags, ice and Kosher salt.
Stir Every 30 Minutes
According to BrownEyedBaker.com, you can take your ice cream out of the freezer every 30 minutes and stir it with a hand mixer. Keep in mind that it will take 2-3 hours of regular stirring before your ice cream will reach the right consistency.
Start with Store Bought
Another option for making affordable ice cream at home is to start with plain store bought vanilla or chocolate and then go wild. Mix in fruit, puree, candy or nuts while the ice cream is soft. Swirl in fudge, caramel or peanut butter. Freeze it again and serve for your own budget-friendly semi-homemade frozen treat.
