Consumers may be paying more for groceries and gas this year, but that’s not stopping many shoppers from spending more on mom too. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), Mother’s Day spending is expected to increase from $140.73 in 2011 to $152.52 in 2012. Total spending is estimated to be $18.6 billion. Mom will be spoiled with clothing, electronics, flowers and more. But if your budget is a little less lofty, we have some ideas for honoring mom without blowing your budget.
DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub Spa services are a popular gift for mom with an estimated $1.3 billion being spent in this category according to the NRF. Give mom a frugal way to soothe and soften her tired, overworked hands for Mother’s Day. Making your own Lemon Sugar Scrub will be extremely affordable. In fact, you may have most of the ingredients in your pantry already—sugar, olive oil and lemon juice. Package it sweetly in a mason jar with a handwritten note.
You may not be able to send mom on a fancy trip, but you can help her find a great place to relax. Moms who love spending time outside with a good book will love the Facedown Beach Lounger from Frontgate.com. It’s on sale for $99.50 which means you’ll be spending about 33% less than the average Mother’s Day shopper. It adjusts to five positions and is ergonomically designed for extra comfort.
Photo gifts are always a great option for mom. Choose from cards, mugs, and photo books from Shutterfly. If you order by Tuesday, May 8 you’ll get your personalized gift in time for mom’s big day.
eBook Gift Card
Many shoppers will buy mom a tablet or eReader for Mother’s Day. But if your mom is already getting her books through a digital format, give her a gift card so she can buy some summer reading material. With a few clicks you can pick up a gift card online for whatever device she owns, whether it’s a Sony eReader , an Amazon Kindle, or a Barnes and Noble Nook.
Dinner or Brunch with Mom
More than half of people polled will take their moms out for a nice brunch or dinner, according to the National Retail Federation. About $3.4 billion will be spent on holiday food. Cut costs in this category while still treating your mom to a nice meal by perusing daily deal sites or restaurant.com. Mom doesn’t even have to know that you’re enjoying a discount while she’s enjoying her special day.
