Avoiding Pain at the Pump: Ways to Earn Free Fuel

Posted on 03/16/2012

Gas is like liquid gold right now and experts say your trip to the pump is only going to get pricier. It’s time to start getting creative about how to avoid the pain at the pump. Check out these unique ways to earn free fuel.

Participate in Rewards Programs Companies are turning high gas prices into a way to market their products, but it’s the consumers who benefit. For instance, with the Kellogg’s Gas Rewards Card, you can earn a $10 pre-paid rewards MasterCard that can be used for gas purchases when you collect ten UPC’s from participating products. If you already eat Kellogg’s cereal this could be an easy way to get a couple free gallons of gas.

Join Fuelperks
Grocery stores and retailers across the country offer shoppers a chance to earn fuel rewards through a program called fuelperks. Find a participating retailer at fuelperks.com, sign up and earn points when you buy items you normally would. Then you can redeem your points to save $.05, $.10, $.20 or more per gallon depending on how much you spend.

Get Rewarded for Travel
Some hotels are trying to offset what it costs to fill your tank by offering free gas to travelers. For instance, when you book a two night stay at a participating Florida hotel the Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau will give you $25 to use towards gas expenses.

Collect Codes
There are many different programs that reward loyal customers with free gas. One to check out is Kellogg’s Passport to Adventure. When you collect codes from four specially marked products you get $5 in gas cash.

Use a Credit Card that Offers Rewards
Some credit cards will give you cash back on purchases, including what you spend at the pump. For instance, the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express offers 3% cash back on gas which is kind of like getting free fuel.

Turn Your Car into an Ad
If you don’t mind the thought of advertising an insurance company or fast food joint from your car, you can earn free gas at FreeGasHelp.com. You must meet requirements like driving more than 1,000 miles a month and living in one of the nine US cities that offer the program. But if you get your car wrapped in an ad, you’ll get paid in free gas.
