How to Use Leap Day to Improve Your Finances

Posted on 02/22/2012

Every four years we all get an extra day: 24 hours, 1,440 minutes, 86,400 seconds. Some of us will waste it, but if we’re smart we’ll use February 29 to do something productive. Here are some tips for using Leap Day to improve your finances.

Spend the Day at Work Since February 29 falls on a Wednesday, many will probably be spending their extra day at work, which can certainly help your finances. Leap years have 52 weeks plus two days which gives you an extra day of pay compared to normal years.

Take Advantage of Leap Year Sales
If you’re planning a purchase, you may want to wait until February 29. Many companies are using the special day as a marketing tool by offering deep discounts on everything from furniture to flights. For instance, Frontier Airlines launched a Leap Year Sale, with flights as low as $60 one way.

Update Your Budget
When was the last time you revisited your budget? Perhaps you need to put your spending in check or start setting aside more money for savings. Take some time to do that during your extra day and it could pay off big time in the long run.

Talk with Your Financial Advisor
If this task somehow perpetually gets moved down your to-do list take care of it on Leap Day. Discuss your financial goals and make sure you have a plan in place to make them a reality. Balance your portfolio and verify you’re staying on track.

Complete Your Taxes
The tax deadline doesn’t come around until April 17 this year, but that doesn’t mean you should procrastinate. That way if you’re getting a refund you’ll have more time to decide what to do with that chunk of cash in your pocket.

Evaluate Your Goals
By this time of year, many of us have set resolutions to the side, but having an extra day can help get back on track. Experts advise using Leap Day as a time to recommit yourself to your aspirations. Carve out time with a journal and help yourself get focused on your financial goals so that you can leap into March with a fresh outlook.
