Realizing Fido or Fluffy has escaped from the sanctuary of home can be terrifying for a loving pet owner. The world is a scary place—especially for lost dogs and cats. If you find yourself in this situation you’ll want to check out these free resources to help you find your missing pet.

Leave a Familiar Scent Outside - Citizens for Animal Protection, a nonprofit serving pets in the Houston area for nearly 40 years, suggests leaving a pet bed or a recently worn sweatshirt outside. It can attract a disoriented pet and help them find their way back home.

Print Free Flyers - Download the free Microsoft Word Flyer Template from LostpetUSA.net and save valuable time in your hunt for your furry family member. Print them out and post them along high-traffic streets, in coffee shops and at nearby schools.

Search Found Pet Databases - There are dozens of found pet databases online. Search them regularly for at least three months after your pup or kitty goes missing. Head to sites like LostFoundPets.us, theCenterforLostPets.com and LostandfoundpetsAmerica.com.

Call Local Authorities - While a missing pet may not be a reason to call 9-1-1, there are other places you can call. It’s a good idea to check with your local animal control office or humane society. Describe your pet and find out if any animal matching that description has been brought in. Don’t just call once—busy shelter workers need to be reminded regularly.

Post a Free Ad - Utilize free classified services like Craigslist to get the word out about your stray pooch or cat. Post the information daily since the newest ads receive the most prominent position on the page.

Update Microchip Information - Is your pet microchipped? Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are inserted between your pet’s shoulder blades. The chip can be scanned to retrieve an owner’s contact information. If your pet does have a microchip make sure your information is up to date. Log into your account, verify your contact information and upload a recent picture of your missing pet. That way if your pet is located, they know exactly how to return it to your loving arms.

I am afraid that this statement is not correct "Utilize free classified services like Craigslist to get the word out about your stray pooch or cat.
