Handmade Holidays: Christmas Gifts and Decorations You Can Start Making Now

Posted on 09/29/2011

Handmade Christmas gifts and decorations are great in theory—they’re affordable, unique and heartfelt. But when the busyness of the holidays is upon us, who has time to devote to crafts? Fall may have just started, but now is a great time to start making Christmas gifts so you can enjoy handmade holidays in the coming months.

Christmas Ornaments - If you start making your Christmas ornaments now they’ll actually be ready for everyone to enjoy all season long. There’s a long list of 101 handmade ornament tutorials over at EverythingEtsy.com. One of my personal favorites are these miniature knitted personalized envelopes from DuoFiberworks.com.

Handmade Gift Card Holders - This is a great way to take a very impersonal gift (a gift card) and give it a personal touch. Martha Stewart offers up some easy tips for making your own gift card holders. Make a bunch of these now, stash them away and you’ll surely win some points for creativity once Christmas rolls around.

Advent Calendar - This is another Christmas tradition that can be forgotten about until it’s too late. That’s because the fun of an advent calendar starts on December 1. Check out this cute advent calendar created by a blogger at visualheart.wordpress.com. All you need is some spray paint, a thrift store frame and clothes pins.

Felted Soap - Soap is a gift anyone can use which makes it a great item to have around for all of those holiday parties. Since felted soap isn’t something you can pick up at the drugstore, it’s a gift many people will enjoy receiving. And judging by the tutorial from mielksfarm.com, it isn’t too difficult to create.

Handmade Scarf - If you know how to knit—congratulations! But if you don’t, no need to panic. Martha Stewart has your back. This cute No-Knit Scarf will make a great Christmas gift for plenty of people who pop up on your list. And it’s something you can start on now while you’re watching all of those fall premiers on TV.
