International Literacy Day is held each year on September 8. It’s a way to not only celebrate reading, writing and literacy, but also to help those who lack access to reading education and materials.

Be A Literacy Advocate - An estimated 18 million adults in the US don’t read well enough to earn a living wage. Ask you elected officials to support literacy programs. Get letter writing help for contacting your legislators at Proliteracy.org.

Donate Books for Africa - According to Books For Africa there’s a book famine in Africa. The organization is working to create a culture of literacy so that the next generation of parents, teachers and leaders is empowered to make a difference. Learn how you can donate books and computers at booksforafrica.org.

Give Gently Used Children’s Books - Did you know that California ranks 49th nationally in books per student? BookEnds.org is trying to change that. The organization turns a $100 donation into $500 worth of books. Participate in a book drive or simply share online what book changed your life.

Volunteer to Read to Kids - Teach kids how to read or help them gain a passion for books by reading to them. Find an after school program or shelter to share your knowledge at Volunteermatch.org. They’ll connect you with a non-profit that needs help.

Spread the Word About Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library - Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library makes it possible for underprivileged kids to get a free book every month until they turn five. Know a needy child who could benefit from a collection of books? Head to ImaginationLibrary.com to see if there is an affiliate in your area.

Click Once a Day - Head to theliteracysite.com every day and click on the big orange button. When you click sponsors pay for books and 100% of the money goes to charity. You can also sign up to receive a free email reminder to click and they’ll give you a free book pin. A quick daily click is an easy and free way to help get books in the hands of kids.
