Ten Affordable Must-Haves For Every Dorm Room

Posted on 07/29/2011

Since dorm rooms are almost completely devoid of anything besides a bed and a desk, you’ll need to do some shopping before heading off to school. Don’t worry if your decorating budget is limited—you can pick up these dorm room must-haves at very affordable prices.

Dorm Refrigerator, $57 - You’ve got to have a place to stash drinks and leftover pizza. For just $57 you can have this 1.7 cubic foot Black and Decker Compact Fridge from Walmart.

Small Microwave, $59.99 - While cooking isn’t really a dorm-friendly hobby, you can definitely do some heating. A compact microwave can cost as little as $59.99 at Best Buy.

Desk Lamp, $29 - Just in case you get stuck with a roommate who doesn’t pull all-nighters, bring a desk lamp for late night studying. The Lighten Up Task Lamp from PB Teen is marked down to $29, regularly $39. It comes in six cool color choices.

Picture Hangers, About $4 - Most dorm rooms are constructed with cement blocks. And cement walls are not friendly for hanging art. But you can use adhesive hanging strips to make sure your framed photos or art can be displayed properly. Pick up a pack at Home Depot for about $4.

Alarm Clock, $14.99 - An alarm clock is almost as necessary as flip flops for the shower. With the Napper Clock, $14.99, you can quickly and easily set yourself a wake-up call for 15, 30, or 60 minutes down the road.

Dry Erase Board, $9.99 - A dry erase board is a great way to communicate in college. Remind yourself about upcoming tests and parties by writing notes out on a White Dry Erase Vinyl Decal from Wallies.com. A set of four is $9.99. They’re removable and re-positionable.

Hanging Storage, About $11 - Take advantage of every square inch of space by stocking up on hanging storage for your dorm room closet. Pick up a hanging shoe shelf at Organize.com for $10.99 with free 2-day shipping. Plus if you enter coupon code school at checkout you’ll save 20% off any one item.

Bath Caddy, $9.99 - Keep trips to the shower organized with the Flexible Shower Tote, $9.99 from ContainerStore.com. It’s big enough to haul all of your necessities to and from the facilities.

Portable Hamper, $7.99 - Stash as much as two full loads of laundry in one convenient tote. The Pop-Up Hamper, $7.99 from BedBathandBeyond.com is made of mesh which will reduce moisture and odor. Plus it comes with handles which means you can cart it home to your parents’ place on the weekend.

Comfy Chair, $24 - You’ll need a place to sit back, relax and watch reality TV with your new friends. Check out the Sea Going Butterfly Chair at Target.com. It’s on sale for $24. Not only is it comfortable, but it will be extremely easy to pack up and move once the school year is over.

Great list of dorm 'must haves' - don't forget to find options for extra storage like trunks as tables, under the bed storage and shelves.
