Low Cost Ways to Help Joplin Tornado Victims

Posted on 06/01/2011

A massive tornado barreled through Joplin, Missouri on May 22. CNN reports that the twister killed at least 125 people and damaged one out of four of the city’s homes and businesses. It’s the single deadliest tornado on record since the US began tracking this data more than 60 years ago. Help this city and its residents repair and rebuild.

Text in a Donation - One of the easiest ways to give is by texting in a donation to the American Red Cross. Simply text “REDCROSS” to 90999 and a $10 donation will be added on to your next cell phone bill. You can also text in a donation to help Convoy of Hope bring truckloads of water, snacks and meals to Joplin. Text “CONVOY” to 50555 to make a $10 donation.

Give to World Vision - World Vision is providing first aid kits, hygiene supplies and other essentials to the victims of the Joplin tornado. By giving a gift of $25 to World Vision you can trust that 85 percent of your donation will go straight towards helping those in need.

Help Displaced Pets - Hundreds of pets have been turned in to the Joplin Humane Society following the twister. They’ve reunited more than 200 with their owners, but volunteers are caring for many more in the meantime. Help them feed and shelter these displaced pets by donating food, beds and collars.

Donate Blood - Donating blood is always important, but especially in the Joplin area. Community Blood Center of the Ozarks operates five donor locations in the area. According to reports they’re in major need of Type O blood.

Volunteer - Do you have skills in areas like first aid, carpentry, or animal care? Fill out a form with the United Way and let them know you’re ready to help. Share your skills and resources to help the tornado victims. Samaritan’s Purse is also coordinating volunteer efforts. Learn more at SPVolunteerNetwork.org.

Drop Off Supplies - Residents of Joplin need basic staples like food, laundry detergent and blankets. Find a collection site in your area by reviewing this large list of Joplin relief drop-off locations. These basic items can make a big difference for someone who has lost everything
