Some of the Most Charitable Companies

Although in many cases cash and product donations have dropped in recent years, American companies are still quite generous. In fact, some of the largest businesses hand out billions to charity each year. Wondering who is the most likely to share their wealth? Here are some of the most charitable companies according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy and Forbes.com.


Drug Companies - Pharmaceutical companies are handing out more than medicine. Many of the biggest drug companies are also the biggest donors. Pfizer tops the list by giving away $2,346,952,232 in 2009. Merck gave away $923.2 million worth of cash and products in 2009. Johnson & Johnson gave away $637 million in cash and goods in 2009. In many cases these drug companies have drastically increased their giving. Pfizer made a huge increase by giving 23% more in 2009 compared to 2008. Abbott gave 26% more in 2009 than they did in 2008.


Oracle - Computer software company Oracle has repeatedly given away billions of dollars a year. In 2009 they donated more than $2 billion worth of cash and goods.


Wal-Mart - Wal-Mart dominates in many areas—including in the area of cash donations. They gave away more than $288 million in cash in 2009 and $200 million more worth of products.


Microsoft - It’s no secret that Bill Gates is incredibly giving. But so is the company he founded. In 2009 Microsoft gave away more than half a billion dollars worth of cash and products.


Comcast - Even if you feel like you’re paying too much for your cable or internet service at least you can feel good about the fact that their giving away a large portion of profits. Comcast gave away more than $406 million 2009.


Target - According to Target.com, the company’s been giving away 5% of income since 1946. That equals about $3 million a week worth of donations that support education, the arts, social services, and volunteerism. According to Forbes.com, they gave away $187 million in 2009, a 3.3% drop from the year before.


Tyson - The food production company Tyson’s $16.4 million may not seem like a huge donation compared to other companies, but it’s actually more than 10% of their company profits. That’s very generous when you consider that on average companies give away about 1.2% of their profits.
