Starting a Blog: Creating Great Content

Posted on 03/21/2011

Blogs. Vlogs. Hyperlinking. SEO content. If you're not blog-savvy, those terms might just make your head spin, but you can't deny the social, career, and monetary rewards that a blog can bring. Where to start? Our tips guru, Alison Storm, is here to help with a three part series on starting your own blog. Take it away, Alison!

A blog can be a great way to express yourself, promote yourself and share yourself. It can also be a nice source of income. But getting to that point requires lots of traffic and nothing will drive people to your blog quite like having great content. This is the second part of a three-part series on starting a blog. I’m going to help you understand why quality content is important as well as how to stay inspired to create and share it.

Build Up Your Blog - Before you start advertising, announcing and promoting your blog it’s best to have it built up with great content. Develop a bank of one or two dozen posts that give visitors plenty to read, learn and enjoy.

Get Into the Habit - If you’re only able to generate one post a month you’re not giving people a reason to visit your blog on a regular basis. Just like hitting the gym or calling your mom, put blog writing into your daily or weekly schedule. Get into the habit of writing fresh posts and hopefully your readers will get in the habit of visiting.

Be Dependable - Blog writing gurus say a great way to create loyalty (and traffic) to your site is by being dependable. Come up with a blog series that’s posted on the same day each week. For example, if your blog is all about Charlie Sheen perhaps you could host “Winning Wednesdays” or “Tiger Blood Tuesdays.” You’ll likely find that having this structure helps you get into the writing habit.

Track Your Industry - A great way to find things to write about is to track what’s going on in your industry. Whether you have a blog about politics or pets there’s stuff going on that you need to be on top of. Set up a Google Reader account and follow other similar blogs. Establish a personalized news feed with information that interests you using services like This will likely become a great source of inspiration for blog post ideas.

Consider Your Audience - Most of us would say that we’re busy. We don’t have hours and hours to devote to blog reading. With that in mind, keep most of your posts focused, informative and conversational. Use bullet points and sub-headings to break up and organize the text. By giving readers more meat and not just fluff, they’ll stay hungry for more.

Do More than Type - Content doesn’t have to just be articles. Shake it up by adding videos, interviews or a series of images. The more interesting you make your content the more interested others will be in devouring it.

Now that you’ve got great content, you need to get people to read it! In the third and final installment of this series I’ll explain how to promote and monetize your blog.
