Oscar Season: Save Money on Movie-Going

Posted on 02/23/2011

Oscar season is in full force. It’s a great time of year to take in all of the award-winning films. But with dozens of nominations in 24 categories, seeing all of those movies can get expensive. Whether you’re a movie buff or not, you’ll love these ways to save money on movie-going.

Free Streaming Movies with Amazon Prime - Amazon is now competing with services like Netflix. They just announced that members of Amazon Prime will not only get free two-day shipping on all orders, but they’ll also receive unlimited, commercial-free instant streaming of 5,000 movies and TV shows. Sign up for a free one-month trial. Once that runs out you’ll pay $79 a year for this service.

Free Month of Netflix - Watch an unlimited amount of movies for free with Netflix’s free trial offer. For one month you’ll have access to both their mail service and the online movie library. It’s open to first time and certain former members. Just make sure you cancel it before your free month is up so you don’t get a bill.

Kellogg Free Movie Codes - Turn points found inside specially-marked Kellogg’s cereals into free movie passes. Once you’ve collected six points you’ll score a free movie ticket worth up to $12. Can’t wait that long? Redeem three points for $5 in free concession cash.

Redbox Free Rental - Head to Redbox.com and set up a free Redbox rental account. Find a kiosk near you, rent a movie for a buck and return it. Then you’ll get a code to rent your next movie for free. You’ll also want to “like” Redbox on Facebook and hit the freebies tab for more deals.

Free Blockbuster Express Rental - There are coupon codes circulating that should give you a free night’s rental at a Blockbuster Express kiosk. Try out FRMOVIE to save a dollar on your movie rental.

Movie Theater Rewards - Chances are you visit the same movie theater over and over. Check with the box office to find out if your theater has a reward program. For instance, with the Regal Crown Club, you can earn points for every movie ticket or concession item you purchase. Once you earn 150 points you’ll get a coupon for a free movie ticket. The programs are free to join and offer a great way to save money at the movies.
