According to the US Energy Information Administration, there is a slight chance that gas prices could jump to over $4 a gallon later this year and an even better shot at $3.50 per gallon prices this summer. Keep your gas tank from destroying your budget by preparing for increases at the pump.

Inflate Tires - Are your tires properly inflated? This simple step can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3% according to fueleconomy.gov. Don’t know what your tire pressure should be? The recommendations for most cars can be found in the driver’s side doorjamb. On a $4 gallon of gas, this move can save you about $.12.

Lower Your Consumption - The best way to lower your price at the pump is to use less fuel. Find ways now to reduce your drive time, shorten your commute or share driving duties with others. Get in the habit of factoring this in to your decision making process. One way to cut costs is to create a carpool. Check out eRideShare.com for help.

Consider Car Rentals - If you live in a city, you may want to consider using a Zipcar when you need transportation. It’s convenient car rental that includes gas, 180 miles and insurance into the hourly rate. Plus when you sign up now you’ll get a $75 free driving credit.

Monitor Area Gas Stations - Prices at the pump can vary quite significantly within the same community. Use a free resource like GasBuddy.com to find out where the cheapest gas in your area is located. There’s also a Gas Buddy app for the Android, iPhone or Windows. Just make sure you’re not defeating the purpose by driving miles and miles out of your way to save a few cents.

Get Help From Groceries - Several grocery store chains are now helping you fill up your gas tank when you fill up your shopping cart. Find out if any grocery stores in your area have gas reward programs like Giant Foods’ Gas Extra Rewards or Bi-Lo’s Fuel Perks program. This way neither your stomach nor your gas tank will have to run on empty.
