Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 and quickly became one of the most well-known icons for peaceful social change in the world. This year Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be celebrated on January 17, 2011. Follow in the footsteps of this great figure in American history by doing something that Dr. King advocated and demonstrated—giving your time. Here are easy ways you can donate one of your most valuable resources in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Find Needs in Your Area - Dr. King loved to ask, “What are you doing for others?” Get an answer to that question by heading to VolunteerMatch.org. Just enter your zip code and find out how you can serve the community in which you live during MLK weekend and throughout the entire year.

Support the Dream with Searches - There is a push to build a Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington DC. Help make this dream a reality by donating your web searches to this worthy cause. When you download the MLK Memorial toolbar you’ll give $.05 for every search you perform. According to MLKMemorial.org, the toolbar is easy to install and free of spyware, popups or adware.

Serve Food at your Local Soup Kitchen - An easy way to give back is to serve food at your local soup kitchen. There is always a meal that needs to be prepared and served. Connect with your local food bank by checking out FeedingAmerica.org.

Give a Semester of Service - In honor of Dr. King, the latest Semester of Service will kick off on January 17. Students all over the country will give time to their communities in a variety of ways. Areas of focus include combating childhood obesity, hunger, and illiteracy. To start a Semester of Service in your area download the free Strategy Guide.

Grab a Toolkit - The White House is working to encourage more people to follow in King’s footsteps by donating their time. They’ve developed free downloadable toolkits to help people get started. Grab a toolkit in the area you’re interested in, whether it’s helping children with reading or launching a community garden.
