The holiday shopping season will probably seem a whole lot longer this year. Sales normally reserved for Black Friday are already rolling out at retailers around the country. Wondering if you need to get a jump on your Christmas gifts? Here are some reasons why you may want to start holiday shopping now.

Similar Sales and Discounts - This year’s holiday shopping season is nearly doubling in length. That’s because retailers are trying to beat the recession by scoring more of your gift budget before you spend it all. Big name stores like Sears, Target and Kohl’s are already marking down some popular merchandise. Sears is holding its Holiday Savings Kickoff by taking an extra 5-15% off sale prices. You’ll get similar deals now as you would normally snag later in the shopping season.

Best Selection - Since stores are betting lots of ad dollars that you’ll start shopping for Christmas gifts early, plenty of consumers probably will. So to get the best selection and make sure you get exactly what you’re looking for, start your shopping soon. Because no one wants a repeat of the Zhu Zhu Pets incident of 2009.

Easier to Budget - Buying all of those presents in the few weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas can be a strain on the budget. By spanning it out over eight weeks instead of four you’ll have more time to pay cash for gifts without having to rely on credit cards.

Layaway - Layaway can be a great way to get your holiday shopping done without going into debt. Lots of stores have layaway programs including Kmart. The eight-week option means you’ll want to get started right away. A down payment is typically required, and then you make additional payments every two weeks or so.

Reduced Stress - To-do lists seem to get incredibly long around the holidays. By beginning to cross people off your gift-buying list now you’ll have less to do later when things get really busy. And a holiday season without stress sounds pretty darn good.
