There are more than 20 million veterans living in the US. While they’ve served in different parts of the world spanning several decades, they’ve all made a sacrifice. November 11 is Veterans Day and we’ve discovered some low cost ways any one can honor and serve veterans.

Attend an Event - This Veterans Day there are likely many events going on in your area to honor local veterans. Take part in one of these ceremonies or parades. Contact a chapter of the VFW or American Legion in your community to see what’s been planned for this holiday.

Donate Your Skills - There are several unique organizations that are working hard to serve veterans in many ways. Chances are there is a way you can use your talents and skills to help those who have given so much to our country. If you’re an attorney you may want to consider getting involved with the Military Pro Bono Project, or if you’re a licensed mental health professional you’ll want to check out the Coming Home Project. Have a handy side? You could also donate your services to Homes for Our Troops. They build specially adapted homes for severely injured vets.

Offer Veterans a Free Ride - You may not have lots of money to donate, but chances are you have a car. Consider organizing a volunteer transportation network. Download this free toolkit from the government to help you get started. Begin by contacting your local VA medical center and letting them know you’re available to provide veterans free transportation.

Tweet to a Veteran - This Veterans Day, use the hashtag #wearegreateful when sending a tweet to veterans. According to gratefulapp.com, these tweets will be screened and printed onto postcards that will be distributed to troops serving around the world.

Purchase a Coin - The online store Products for Good launched the One in a Million Project. By purchasing a coin for $20, you can send a personalized thank you message to a veteran. It’s a way to honor the millions of veterans in the US.
