Low Cost Ways to Stay Healthy During Flu Season

Posted on 10/13/2010

The flu is nothing to sneeze at. According to the Centers for Disease Control website, there were nearly 42,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations during last flu season and 2,125 flu-related deaths. Want to keep yourself free of the flu this year? Here are some low cost ways to stay healthy during flu season. (P.S. - Gesundheit!)

Wash Your Hands - Sounds pretty basic, but health care officials agree that hand washing can be a great way to prevent the flu from attacking. Be sure to wash your hands regularly—especially after coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose or coming into close contact with lots of people or public spaces. No water nearby? Use hand sanitizer. An eight ounce bottle of Purell is half off this week at OfficeDepot.com.

Launder Hand Towels - When was the last time you washed those hand towels hanging in your bathroom? You may be good at washing your hands, but if the towels you use to dry are dirty it won’t do much good. Launder them regularly.

Keep Hands Away from Face - Your hands come into contact with the most germs. So avoid transferring those germs to sensitive locations like your eyes, nose and mouth. Keep your hands away from your face.

Get a Flu Shot - According to officials, seasonal flu vaccines can help ward off sickness. They work between 30-90 percent of the time depending on your age, health, and the strain of viruses circulating throughout your community. You can schedule one online at CVS.com, or print out a Flu Vaccine Form to get one at your local Walgreens pharmacy. Or check out Walmart.com to find a flu shot clinic near you. Flu shots at Walmart are just $24.

Take Your Vitamins - Vitamins are important all year, but especially during cold and flu season. Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Vitamin D all help boost your immune system. Check out VitaminEmporium.com to save up to 70% on your vitamin supply. Plus, for a limited time, you can save $10 on your order of $25 or more.

Go to Bed - A rested body is more able to fight off sickness. Give yourself permission to get lots of shut eye. It’s a free way to stay healthy this flu season.
