Aunt Marge, Cousin Eddie and the whole gang have decided to come to your place for Thanksgiving. Or Christmas. Or the entire month of December. No matter how many guests you’re expecting (or how long they plan to stay) it’s best to give them a warm welcome. Consider these low cost ways to prepare for overnight guests.

Give Guests a Hotel-Like Experience - No, that doesn’t mean you’ll stick them with a bill at the end. Have a small basket of necessities waiting that includes a toothbrush, toothpaste and soap just in case they forgot anything. Set out a stack of clean towels so they don’t have to go hunting through your linen closet to find them. And make sure the sheets are freshly washed.

Buy Some Fresh Flowers - Next time you’re at the grocery store buy a bouquet of fresh flowers. Put a small vase in the guest bedroom and bathroom as a special gesture to let your loved ones know you’re glad to have them for the holidays.

Stock Up on Snacks - Ask your guests what kind of snacks they enjoy and stock up before their arrival. Have a bowl of fresh fruit on hand as well as something sweet, like muffins or cookies. You don’t have to spend a lot for this gesture to go a long way.

Clear out Some Closet Space - Guests will need a place to put clothing and shoes. Clear out some closet space before they arrive. Leave a few empty hangers in case they want to hang anything up. It won’t cost you any money, but it will definitely make them feel more welcome.

Provide Reading Materials - Most people like to do a little reading before bed. Provide your guests with a book you recently enjoyed or a couple of magazines they might find interesting.

Organize Activities - Your guests probably don’t expect you to wine and dine them during their entire stay. But having a few low cost activities set up will keep everyone occupied and happy. Check out the local community calendar for low-cost events or plan a tour that includes some of your favorite stores, coffee shops and restaurants.
