We shop online, bank online, and do, well, pretty much everything online. So keeping our identity safe online should be a top priority. But somehow paying big bucks to keep our identity safe doesn’t sound like fun. Here are some free and cheap tools for enhancing online privacy.

Avira AntiVir - Protect your computer from viruses with a free download of Avira. You’ll get lots of features including customizable security scans that protect both internal and external hard drives, internal security that prevents AntiVir’s files from being altered and one-click threat removal. It’s a free way to protect one of your most valuable assets.

Hushmail - It may look and feel like your typical email account, but Hushmail says it’s the most secure web-based free email service in the world, trusted by millions of people and thousands of businesses. Email messages are encrypted and scanned for viruses. That means you don’t have to worry about what’s coming in or going out.

CenturionSoft - You may think of the emails you send as a two-way conversation, but the experts behind CentruionSoft say that’s not how it works. All electronic messages are sent through a system of routers and servers, allowing them to be read and stored. However, sending email with CenturionSoft means that it will be password protected and encrypted. A single use of the software is $59.95, or you can download the free trial version.

BrowserSPY - When you’re walking around the web, you’re likely leaving digital footprints behind. Those footprints can tell others what sites you visit, what fonts you use and what hardware you’re running. BrowserSPY offers a long list of free tests you can run to see just how much information you’re revealing.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - In about eight minutes, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware promises to remove even the most advanced malware and spyware. For $24.95 you can get added safeguards including scheduled updates and protection that blocks malicious processes before they start doing any damage.
