The Riskiest Ways to Save Money

Posted on 07/15/2010

Some money-saving strategies are no-brainers. Using coupons? Why not! Getting rid of those movie channels you never watch? Makes sense! Carpooling with co-workers? Sure! But sometimes cutting corners just to save a few bucks can get you into trouble. Here are some of the riskiest ways to save money.

Putting Off the Oil Change - When that little warning light comes on signaling that you need an oil change, don’t ignore it. Putting off an oil change that may cost $30 now will set you back thousands down the road. Driving a car that needs oil will eventually destroy the engine.

Downloading Pirated Movies and Music - Think downloading illegal music and movies is a great way to save some money from your entertainment budget? Think again. Tens of thousands of people who illegally downloaded The Hurt Locker are being sued. According to reports, the film only made $16 million at the box office and those behind the movie say that’s partly because so many people downloaded it illegally for free. Voltage Pictures and US Copyright Group have decided to sue and they’re gathering IP addresses so they know who the bad guys are. Avoid a legal battle and just rent the movie instead.

Driving with Expired Tags - Paying taxes and fees to Uncle Sam can get annoying. But it’s not nearly as bad as getting stuck with hefty fines or even the threat of jail time if you’re caught driving with expired tags. Just pay the fee on time and avoid the risk.

Eating Clearance Meat - Bargain grocery stores are great for finding deals, but sometimes the meat you find on clearance can be of questionable quality. Ask yourself if the risk of getting food poisoning is worth the money you’ll save by eating meat that’s well past its prime.

Avoiding Simple Home Maintenance - Taking care of a home requires lots of regular maintenance. Avoiding tasks like cleaning out gutters, fixing small leaks and replacing old air filters is a bad idea. Small jobs that would have cost a few dollars to complete will quickly turn into major issues with big repair bills.

Canceling Dentist Appointments - Virtually no one enjoys going to the dentist, but it’s often the preventative trips for cleanings that will squelch the need for major mouth repairs in the future. If the dentist says you have a cavity—get it filled. Avoiding the hassle now is a risky move that could have you spending a lot more time in the dentist’s office in the future.

Walmart Sales of meat can be particularly dangerous when consumers shop the grocery aisle first, then wander with the meat in their carts and eventually leave it else where in the store. It can then be returned to the cooler by teenage employees rather than thrown out as is their policy.

Word to the Wise.
