How to Make Extra Money on Etsy

Posted on 06/10/2010

Candle makers, necklace designers and hair bow creators all find a home on Etsy. It’s an online marketplace for handmade crafts and vintage finds launched in 2005 by a Brooklyn team. And in just a few short years it’s become an extremely popular way for people to make money. Last year $180.6 million worth of goods were sold on the site. Want a piece of that pie? We talked to successful Etsy sellers to get tips on how to make extra money on Etsy.

Get Competitive - There are more than 400,000 active Etsy sellers which means you’ve got to be competitive if you want to make sales. Amy Galon launched her Etsy shop, CaughtREDhanded, in the spring of 2007 as a way to make extra money with her jewelry-making hobby. She started off with a few sales the first month, but that quickly turned into a dozen a day. She says the secret is staying competitive and keeping up with trends. If peacocks are big, then Amy designs peacock jewelry for her shop.

Take Great Pictures - In a world where you can’t pick up a product and touch it, photos are absolutely essential. Etsy pros will tell you, if you don’t have great photos of your product, don’t expect sales. Etsy offers a huge section of free tutorials to help you improve your shop’s photography.

Describe with Keywords - Coming up with a cute name for your Etsy products may be creative, but it won’t help potential buyers find your shop. Using keywords that describe the color, materials and style will make it easier for others to discover the item.

Add New Items Often - Early on Galon discovered that if she regularly renews a piece of jewelry she’s selling, her store moves to the top of her category, getting a prime position for those browsing on Etsy. Renewing an item costs $.20, but Galon says she spends her entire marketing budget on this simple step. And it’s paid off. She holds the position as one of the top ten jewelry artists on Etsy, and is regularly featured on the site’s homepage where her work is seen by thousands.

Use Etsy Forums - An Etsy store is a business. Making it a success may not happen overnight, but don’t get discouraged. Get advice, encouragement and expertise from the Etsy forums. It’s a place to ask questions and get answers from other Etsy sellers who have been through it all.

Consider Wholesale - One way to ensure repeat business is to sell your Etsy products wholesale. Lots of store owners find their merchandise from Etsy artists. Set a wholesale price and a minimum first purchase, like six journals or 10 prints. Make sure your shop listing lets buyers know that wholesale pricing is available.
