Free Games for Your Summer Road Trip

Posted on 06/08/2010

Families all across the country will jump in their cars this summer for memory-making trips. If you don’t want to hear “are we there yet?” for eight hours straight, plan ahead by organizing some free games that will make the expedition more enjoyable for both kids and adults-- because sometimes vacations are more about the journey than the destination.

Car Bingo - Car Bingo is a fun game that incorporates your surroundings. Print off two versions at roadside items and vehicles. There are four styles of cards for each game which means you can have up to four players searching for things like stop signs, airplanes or tractors.

Backseat Boredom Busters - Make the backseat a fun place to be with free boredom busters from Disney FamilyFun Print off word searches and scrambles. They’ve also got free printable puzzles that can coordinate with your travel destination like the desert puzzle.

Travel Mazes - Little kids love mazes. Check out the big selection of free printable mazes at With 11 available mazes, your little one should be occupied at least until you make it across the county line.

License Plate Game - Before portable DVD players and handheld video games there was the License Plate Game. It occupied kids traveling on America’s highways all summer long. Check out the free printable version from Real Simple Magazine where spotting plates from states with lower populations get higher points.

Travel Memory - Crayola offers free printable coloring pages and games like Travel Memory. It can be played solo or with a group. After looking at the items pictured on a page for a minute, you’ll have to draw as many as possible from memory. Kids can try to improve their score all the way to the next rest stop.

Wishing my kids were old enough for this type of stuff. For now with my 2yr old we rely on the DVD player a little too much.
