Using Your Freezer to Save Money

Posted on 03/03/2010

It’s not just for frozen pizza and ice cubes. Another tool for cutting down your budget is already sitting in your kitchen. Here are ways to use your freezer to save money.

Stock Up During Sales - When chicken or beef prices are slashed at the grocery store, don’t be afraid to stock up. Stick the extras in your freezer and pull it out down the road. This will prevent you from paying a premium for meat more often.

Try Once a Month Cooking - If you often find yourself rushing to fix dinner, then cooking just once a month may seem like a great idea. Find plans for Once a Month Cooking at You’ll spend just one day cooking, then freeze your creations for delicious meals all month long. As an added bonus, you’ll never have to pick up fast food because you didn’t have time to cook.

Make the Call - Rather than wait until something spoils only to toss it out, make the call earlier on. If you know you’re not going to be able to use food before it goes bad, just stick in the freezer—and you’ll keep it from going into the garbage can later.

Freeze Fruits - Did you know you can freeze fruit and use it for future smoothies? Buy in-season fruits when they’re at their cheapest, bag them and store in the freezer.

Prepare Go-To Items - Things like beans, stock and tomato sauce probably get used quite a bit in your house. Save yourself time and money by keeping these handy in your freezer. To save space put food in plastic baggies, lay them flat and stack them. Forgo bulky containers that will take up more room than necessary.

Always Be Ready for Guests - When guests arrive unannounced, your freezer can be like having a personal chef. Make muffins, treats or hors d’oeuvres ahead of time and keep them in the freezer in case a special need arises.
