Ten of the Hottest Holiday Toys & Where to Buy Them for the Best Price

Posted on 12/04/2009

Just like the Cabbage Patch Doll and Tickle Me Elmo of years gone by, every Christmas is marked by hot toys—or ten of them. They are the toys that parents are willing to barter, beg and splurge on just so they can see Junior’s ecstatic face on Christmas morning. Here are ten of the hottest holiday toys and where to buy them for the best price - plus, check the Christmas Sales page at UltimateCoupons for deals on decking the halls!

Zhu Zhu Pets - Kid begging for a real hamster? Give them one of this year’s hottest toys instead—Zhu Zhu Pets. They don’t poop, die or escape from their cages, but they do have 40 different sound effects and life-like movements. The only problem with Zhu Zhu Pets is they are hard to find. A three-pack at Target will normally cost about $24, but they’re sold out. Sign up to get notified when more become available, or pay a premium right now. Some online sellers are marking up Zhu Zhu pets to over $100, but we found one eCrater seller offering them for $37.25 plus shipping.

Barbie Fashion Fever Barbie Doll - Barbie is one of those toys that is always hot—but this year the Fashion Fever Barbie is particularly smokin’. Lots of retailers are sold out and others are trying to make a quick buck off of desperate parents by marking them up. We found the Fashion Fever Country Rock Barbie for $14.99 at ToyStoreInc.com.

Crayola Beginnings Color Me a Song - The Crayola Beginnings Color Me a Song is an interactive toy where toddlers make music while they scribble. It’s tough to come by, but they’re in stock at Target.com and are selling for $19.99. That’s $8 less than you’ll find them at other stores like Kohl’s.

FurReal Friends Lulu My Cuddlin’ Kitty Cat - You won’t find the FurReal Friends Lulu My Cuddlin’ Kitty Cat at Target or Kohl’s—they’re out of stock. But Toys "R" Us has them available with a price tag of $44.99. Spend a few more dollars and you’ll qualify for free shipping. Just in case Toys “R” Us sells out, BuyRobotPets.com also says they have them in stock at the same price.

LeapFrog Text and Learn - The LeapFrog Text and Learn helps children learn and play in a grown-up way. This popular toy is available at Wal-Mart for $16.49 with free shipping when you have it sent to your local Wal-Mart location. Otherwise you can pick it up for a little less from LeapFrog.com where it’s just $14.99.

Fast Lane JLX OverDrive Radio Control All Terrain Vehicle - Toys “R” Us may be out of stock of the Fast Lane JLX OverDrive Radio Control All Terrain Vehicle, but Sky Mall has them ready to go at the same price-- $119. Plus if you shop through Ebates.com, you’ll get 2.5% cash back on your purchase.

Tonka Chuck My Talking Truck - Lots of retailers are sold out of Tonka’s Chuck My Talking Truck. It’s a talking dump truck that makes over 40 sounds and phrases. Thankfully Kohl’s has them ready to ship and they’re on sale for just $27.99.

Dance Around Dora - Dance Around Dora is an interactive toy kids are going crazy for. She’ll teach girls some moves and when you press her necklace she’ll do a dance for you. Dance Around Dora is sold out at Toys “R” Us, but you can pay a little more for her at Amazon.com where she’s in stock. Plus, you’ll get free shipping.

Spike Jr. - Spike Jr. walks, laughs and roars at the push of a button. Walmart.com is out of stock on Spike Jr, but do a quick search of stores in your area to see if any are available. Otherwise, head to Target.com, where they’ve got the price of Spike Jr. down to $18.

Tamagotchi Music Star - This hot little toy is great for ages eight and up. Tamagotchi Music Star let’s you create your own band and play eight different music games. Tamagotchi Music Star is on sale for just $9.95 at Atamaii.com, plus you can play “Scratch & Save” to get a coupon code to use at checkout for a deeper discount.

I found this cool free service that can help you get Zhu Zhu Pets on Amazon for $9.99. It watches inventory and notifies you as soon as it's in stock at Amazon's low price so you can buy it before it's gone. Go to http://www.aznotify.com

I buy zhu zhu pets from Amazon re-sellers all the time. I haven't had any more (or less) problems with them than I've had with any other internet vendors.

Recently I came to know that there is a website named AmazingWatcher.Com which is a free website that will “watch” items for you on Amazon and let you know when amazon has them in stock at regular retail price. It got so awesome!
Good luck everybody!

If you buy from Amazon you might want to bookmark the URL of HeresYourItem.com. This free service can help you get hard to find and out of stock items, sometimes at large savings (80% or more below reseller price using Zhu Zhu Pets as an example). The site can also be used as a convenient portal to Amazon to keep track of items you are potentially interested in buying. A click on an item in your "Watch List" immediately brings up the Amazon page for that item.
